Install AIP

AIP is available as an experimental binary preview for macOS and Linux, on Apple Silicon/ARM64 and Intel/x64. Running it requires neither Go, Bun, nor Git.

Install the CLI

curl -fsSL https://aip-project.org/install.sh | sh

The installer detects your OS and CPU, downloads the latest preview, verifies its SHA-256 checksum, and installs aip into $HOME/.local/bin. It never runs sudo or edits shell configuration. It replaces an existing regular aip file only after download and verification succeed; symlink destinations are refused.

Ensure $HOME/.local/bin is on your PATH, then run aip version.

To inspect the installer before running it, download /install.sh and read it first. To pin a release or choose another directory, pass environment variables to the shell running the installer:

curl -fsSL https://aip-project.org/install.sh | \
AIP_VERSION=v0.1.0-preview.1 AIP_INSTALL_DIR="$HOME/.local/bin" sh

Repeating installation upgrades to the current preview. Setting AIP_VERSION installs that exact published version. There is no automatic background updater.

Direct downloads: v0.1.0-preview.1

These are gzip-compressed executables, not tar archives. Versioned release files are preserved rather than overwritten. Checksums detect damaged downloads; they are not release signatures. Signed releases and Windows support are planned.

Set up an agent

From your project directory, run aip init, then aip agent setup. For an existing AIP repository, run only aip agent setup.

Initialization creates .aip/AGENTS.md. Agent setup also creates a root AGENTS.md if one does not exist. Existing instructions are preserved. If you already have a root guide, add the AIP workflow to it deliberately.

The root guide travels with snapshots; the local .aip/ guide does not. See working with agents.

Download and build

Building from source requires Go 1.27 or newer. The Go CLI has no external dependencies. Bun is used for website and release tooling only.

Download the source archive and its SHA-256 checksum. The archive contains the Go source, tests, protocol specification, golden vectors, and license.

On macOS or Linux:

mkdir aip-preview && cd aip-preview &&
curl -fLO https://aip-project.org/downloads/aip-source-preview.tar.gz &&
curl -fLO https://aip-project.org/downloads/SHA256SUMS &&
shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS &&
tar -xzf aip-source-preview.tar.gz &&
cd aip-source-preview &&
go test ./... &&
mkdir -p "$HOME/.local/bin" &&
go build -o "$HOME/.local/bin/aip" ./cmd/aip

Ensure $HOME/.local/bin is on your PATH. You can also build to another existing directory. Run aip --help to verify installation.

This source preview archive may change as development continues, so retain the checksum with your downloaded copy.

Already have the source?

From the project directory:

go test ./... &&
go build -o /tmp/aip ./cmd/aip &&
/tmp/aip --help

Keep the executable outside an AIP-tracked project so it does not enter snapshots.

Continue with the first workflow.
